What the record adds up to
- Dynamics 365 Business Central scores 8.2 and Odoo scores 8.0. That is close enough to be a tie, so the decision rests on the detail below rather than the headline.
- Dynamics 365 Business Central is ahead on everyday use, support and skills and south african fit.
- Odoo is ahead on depth of features and value for money.
- Odoo has the cheaper entry price, and over three years at the standing rate the gap is about R42k before VAT, add on modules or extra users.
- On South African fit Dynamics 365 Business Central is the stronger of the two. Localisation is solid, but nothing about it is designed for this market.

Dynamics 365 Business Central
About R1 280 per user per month on Essentials. Microsoft charges eighty dollars per user billed yearly and excluding VAT, converted at sixteen rand to the dollar, so the bill arrives in dollars. Premium is one hundred and ten dollars and Team Members licences are eight dollars for read and approve access, which is how you keep the total down. The licence is rarely the largest number. Partner implementation usually is, so get that quoted before you compare the per user rate to anything else.
Odoo
One app free for unlimited users, then about R116 per user per month on Standard. Odoo charges seven dollars twenty five per user, converted at sixteen rand to the dollar, billed in dollars. The per user model means the cost is driven by headcount rather than by how many apps you switch on, which is generous once you use several. Implementation is the real budget line. South African VAT and payroll localisation should be confirmed with your partner before signing.
Capability
What each one actually does
The capabilities we tested in each review, written out rather than reduced to ticks in a grid. A tick tells you a feature exists. It does not tell you whether it is any good.
Dynamics 365 Business Central
- Financial management
- Multi entity, multi currency general ledger with consolidation and dimensional reporting that finance teams can actually use for analysis.
- Microsoft Copilot
- Included in the licence rather than charged as an add on. Drafts descriptions, reconciles and summarises, with the usual need to verify.
- Supply chain
- Purchasing, inventory, warehousing and planning in one place, with the demand forecasting that distributors need to hold less stock.
- Microsoft 365 integration
- Work inside Outlook and Excel against live data. For a business already on Microsoft this removes a great deal of copying between systems.
- Power BI reporting
- Reporting through Power BI rather than a limited built in tool, which is a significant advantage for anyone with analytics ambitions.
Odoo
- One App Free
- A single application free for unlimited users, permanently. For a business that only needs, say, inventory, this is an unusually good offer.
- Modular apps
- Accounting, inventory, manufacturing, CRM, ecommerce and more share one database, which removes most integration work between them.
- Manufacturing
- Bills of material, work orders and routing at a price far below traditional manufacturing ERP. Depth is real but expect configuration.
- Odoo Studio
- Build custom screens and fields without code. Powerful and also the fastest way to create an upgrade problem if used carelessly.
- Open source core
- The community edition can be self hosted, which suits businesses that want control over their data and have technical capacity.

Getting it running
Setup, and who answers when it breaks
Dynamics 365 Business Central
What it takes to start
A partner led implementation measured in weeks or months depending on scope. Data migration, chart of accounts design, dimension structure and approval workflow are all decisions taken during the project, and they are difficult to change afterwards. Budget internal time as well as consulting fees, because your own people are needed throughout.
When something breaks
Support runs through your Microsoft partner, with Microsoft behind them. The local partner channel is deep, which makes finding help straightforward and makes quality variable. Ask for the support agreement separately from the implementation quote, and confirm what response time you are actually buying.
Odoo
What it takes to start
The One App Free tier installs in minutes. A multi app rollout is an ERP project and should be planned as one, with a partner, a scope and a phased go live. The specific South African question to resolve early is VAT and payroll localisation, which is maintained by the community rather than guaranteed by the vendor.
When something breaks
Odoo offers support with a paid subscription and the community forum is active. In practice your partner is your support line, so the partner selection decides the experience. Get a named contact, a response time and an escalation path in writing before signing, because a community forum is no help when invoicing is down.
Strengths and limits
Where each one gives ground
Dynamics 365 Business Central
- Copilot is included in the licence rather than sold as a separate AI add on
- Work against live data inside Outlook and Excel, which removes a lot of copying between systems
- Team Members licences give read and approve access cheaply, which controls the total cost
- Billed in dollars per user per year, so the rand cost moves with the exchange rate
- Partner implementation is usually a larger number than the licence itself
- Heavier than a South African mid market product for a single company with simple needs
Odoo
- One app free for unlimited users, permanently, which is unmatched if your need is narrow
- Accounting through manufacturing and ecommerce share one database, removing integration work
- Manufacturing depth at a price far below traditional manufacturing ERP
- The economics change completely the moment you need a second app
- South African localisation is community maintained rather than vendor guaranteed
- Odoo Studio makes customisation easy and upgrades harder, which is a trap for the unwary
Local view
How each one behaves in South Africa
Dynamics 365 Business Central
Business Central is properly localised for South African VAT and is well supported by a deep local Microsoft partner channel, so finding help is not difficult. The cost is the consideration. Microsoft charges in dollars per user per year, so your rand cost drifts with the exchange rate in a way that a locally priced product does not. Use Team Members licences aggressively for anyone who only needs to read or approve, because full licences for casual users is the most common way this becomes expensive. Get the implementation quoted separately from the licence.
Odoo
The important South African caveat is localisation. Odoo VAT and payroll handling for this country is maintained by the community and by partners rather than guaranteed by the vendor the way Sage guarantees a Pastel tax update. That is a meaningful difference in risk, and it is the question to put to any partner in writing before you sign. Get a named person who is responsible for keeping your VAT treatment correct. The product itself is capable and good value. The support model for local compliance is where the exposure sits.
Closing judgement
What we said about each one
Dynamics 365 Business Central
A strong choice for a Microsoft centred business ready for real ERP. Use Team Members licences aggressively and treat implementation as the main cost.

Odoo
Excellent value and genuinely broad. Treat a multi app rollout as an ERP project with a partner, and confirm local tax handling early rather than late.
